Since launching our ICON-GLASS range of digitally printed glass splashbacks, wall art and radiators we are regularly asked a number of similar questions relating to this exciting product.

We have therefore produced the following list of answers to the most frequently asked questions on ICON-GLASS:

How much does it cost?

For a quote, please contact our team with the required dimensions.

What are the minimum & maximum sizes?

We can digitally print onto peices of glass as small as 150mm x 100mm right upto as big as 2500mm x 1500mm. You can also place multiple peices/panels next to each other for a larger overall size.

Can holes/cut outs be included?

Of course, depending on the size of the glass panel, cut outs and drilled holes can be included for additional costs.

Is the glass toughened?

Yes, ICON-GLASS is produced using high quality toughened low iron glass, with all edges polished.

When using ICON-GLASS as a kitchen splashback, how far away from the hobs does it need to be?

Glass splashbacks made from standard glass should be kept at least 150mm away from a heat source. However we use toughened glass, which can be placed directly behind a heat source with no problems.

How is ICON-GLASS fitted?

ICON-GLASS can be placed using a simple mirror bond/adhesive. Tubes of this can be added to your order if required.

Do you provide a templating or fitting?

At this moment in time, we don't. However, each ICON-GLASS project is different so please contact our team directly to discuss this further.

What are the delivery/lead times?

ICON-GLASS is produced to order. We aim for a complete turnaround of 4 weeks. It could be faster, however this is the timeframe we set ourselves.

The Library of Birmingham

As a Birmingham based company with a showroom in the historic Jewellery Quarter, we are extremely excited about the new Library of Birmingham shooting up Centenary Square. The fact that it will be a large transparent glass building further cements the fact we are big fans!


How it will look.

The project, by architects Mecanoo, began at the design stage in 2008. The construction than began last year and will run through to 2013 when the Library is due to be opened.

Below is what Macanoo have to say about this exciting, major project:

Centenary Square, the largest public square in the heart of Birmingham, currently lacks cohesion or a clear identity or atmosphere. Mecanoo’s design transforms the square into one with three distinct realms: monumental, cultural and entertainment. These palazzos form an urban narrative of important periods in the history of the city; The Repertory Theatre (REP), a 1960s concrete building, the Library of Birmingham, designed in 2009 and Baskerville House, a listed sandstone building designed in 1936. The busiest pedestrian route in the city, what Mecanoo calls the red line, leads pedestrians into Centenary Square. The cantilever of the library is not only a large canopy that provides shelter at the common entrance of the Library of Birmingham and the REP, but additionally forms a grand city balcony with views of the events and happenings on the square.

The Library of Birmingham is a transparent glass building. Its delicate filigree skin is inspired by the artisan tradition of this once industrial city. Elevators and escalators dynamically placed in the heart of the library forms connections between the eight circular spaces within the building. These rotundas play an important role not only in the routing through the library but also provide natural light and ventilation. The rooftop rotunda houses the Shakespeare Memorial Room, designed in 1882. This Victorian reading room is lined with wood from the first Birmingham Central Library. Its prominent position as a rooftop aerie makes this delicate room visible from the square. The REP with its unique and beautiful auditorium will be renovated. New workshops, staff accommodations and a shared theatre and foyer space will be created for both the REP and the library.

The Library of Birmingham is a BREEAM excellent rated building and incorporates grey water systems and ground source heat pumps. Although the Library is a transparent building, it maintains energy efficiency through the buffering capacity of the building mass and the atria. Sun shading and reflective materials within the facades block the harsh rays of the sun during the height of afternoon while allowing natural daylight into the interiors. The ground floor benefits from the mass of the soil which provides buffering and insulation. The circular patio cut out of the square creates a protected outdoor space and invites daylight deep into the building. The building will incorporate a mixed mode and natural ventilation strategy. The façade will respond to external conditions and openings will allow fresh air intake and outflow. The addition of soft landscaped roof spaces will further enhance the immediate surrounding conditions.

How the interior will look when complete.

One of the main reasons we've opened our first glass furniture showroom in Birmingham is the fact we see this cultural City as being in the middle of some really exciting architectural projects. As well as the Library of Birmingham, New Street Station is going through an extraordinary transformation into a stunning 21st century transport hub. There is also a large renovation project approaching for the Jewellery Quarter, right on our doorstep.

Christmas is almost upon us! (Sort of...)

"Where did the year go?!" We hear you ask. No idea!

The build up to Christmas is always a busy period here at Glassdomain, which is why we are running out of time to guarantee Christmas deliveries.

Because our luxury curved glass furniture from SOVET and FIAM is imported from Italy, we usually aim for a turnaround time of 6 weeks, which means any orders placed now would not be delivered until the new year.

However! Fear not, because the UV bonded glass furniture we produce here in England is usually delivered within 4 weeks. Therefore, customers who order by Wednesday 23rd November can expect to receive their shiny new glass furniture from Glassdomain before Christmas.

In this blog post we'd like to tell you everything you need to know about our friends at Sovet Italia.

Sovet was founded at the end of the 80’s, the period in which glass became a very important protagonist in the furniture market. The modern glass-processing technique enables joining the maximum artistic expression with innovative and functional projects, combining tradition, advanced technologies and contemporary design.

Sovet Glass Coffee Table (Green Lacquered Glass)

Starting from the 90’s the company confirms itself as a leader of the sector thanks to its range of products which stand out for the originality of the forms, colours and finishes; pure protagonists of a unique and unmistakable space.

Sovet Valencia Glass Dining Table

During the following years Sovet tested new solutions for the use of bent glass and refined its own project culture till developing, in 2003, together with Altherr Lievore Molina’s studio, the DIVETRO collection: a real turning point for the company. The collection represents an ambitious research project with strong contents of formal and technologic innovation, marked by the chic minimalism of Altherr Lievore Molina’s studio.

In the last few years SOVET perceives the need to enlarge its offer including also other materials in order to satisfy the requirements of a wider and demanding market. From this experience and the meeting with architect Gianluigi Landoni arises the present Sovet’s research, with transversal, innovative and original proposals, for home and contract.

One of our most popular items to date is the Circular Glass Dining Table, taken from our Crystal Range.

Whilst functional, the striking design is sure to grab peoples attention and is one of the main factors attracting customers to this item.

Providing a beautiful centerpeice for any home, the gentle curves give this glass dining table its distinguished style.

Made from 12mm clear toughened glass, the legs are UV bonded together, with the top placed on top and kept secure with rubber distance holders. The standard dimensions for this item are 1500mm.diameter x 720mm.h, however it may be made to bespoke dimensions following discussions with our design team. Following the expansion of our ICON-GLASS splashbacks offering, we now have a selection of these striking designs on display in our Birmingham showroom.

ICON-GLASS splashbacks are the perfect replacement to tiling, providing a single easy to clean surface. They are also easy to install and maintain.

We have taken a few designs from each of our ICON-GLASS image collections.

The main goal of displaying a selection of splashbacks in our new showroom is to show people the possibilities ICON-GLASS will bring. Our image collections are made up of images we have selected which we feel give the best impact and suit different peoples tastes. If you can't find the design you're looking for, or have your own ideas, we can digitally print your own images onto our6mm low iron toughened glass.

Made In Britain

We at Glassdomain are proud of the fact our UV bonded glass furniture and digitally printed glass is produced in Britain.

We are therefore more than happy to be supporting the Made In Britain campaign from Stoves.

Earlier this year, Stoves launched a national campaign to call for a standard Made in Britain marque to be applied to all products manufactured in the UK.

They are now calling for all UK manufacturers to support the campaign and British manufacture by displaying this logo on their websites, marketing material or packaging - helping make it easier for people to buy British.

At Glassdomain, whilst we specialise in glass furniture, we admire all things glass.

Danny Lane is a designer who's work we love, ranging from small domestic furniture to huge glass sculptures.

Taken from his website:

Lane’s work combines a monumental, and at times brutal, physicality; stacked and fractured glass, twisted or rusted steel, with his strong belief in the metaphysical and transcendental qualities of art.

His London studio is equipped to create works of considerable scale, in glass, and in steel. Glass furnaces will now enable Lane to create works of fluidity and brilliant colour.

Danny Lane’s work can be found in museums, private and corporate collections world-wide.

Corning have put together a nice video showing their vision for the future, a day made of glass.

In this video, glass has been used to fuse together both futuristic technology and everyday items from the current day, including cars and even bus stops.

It is basically the world as a giant iPad!

This section will layout the main product specifications, including dimensions, options and materials used.

Probably the most exciting section for us, as it is here we are able to show off the products a lot more than before. Each item will eventually have 4-8 different images, giving you a clearer understanding of the product and how it's put together.

Another exciting developement, this section suggests other items which could accompany the product you're looking at.

Featured item: Poise Glass Boardroom/Conference Table

We've had the Poise Glass Boardroom/Conference Table in our Birmingham showroom since we opened earlier this year. However it hasn't been included on our website as it was a new product, until now, following a flurry of interest from people visiting the showroom.

This large barrel shaped table will make an attention grabbing centrepeice, suitable for any office or boardroom. The glass top is UV bonded to the legs to complete a contemporary yet funtional piece.

Over the last few weeks, we have been working on the ICON-GLASS side of our website to include our latest offerings.

ICON-GLASS brings a whole host of new opportunities for architects and designers alike. By combining glass with a unique printing process we are now able to offer a range of products that will revolutionise interior design. ICON-GLASS splashbacks and wall coverings are extremely versatile and will work in almost any environment whether it’s domestic or commercial.

Whilst ICON-GLASS enables you the customer to have any image printed onto our 6mm toughened glass, we have also created 6 collections, containing contrasting sets images to suit different peoples taste.

More ICON-GLASS is fitted in the showroom

We have now fitted ICON-GLASS into the display showers and rear entrance hall of our new Birmingham showroom.

To show the flexibility of ICON-GLASS, we have used very contrasting designs in the two display showers with an underwater image and a classic wallpaper design. The idea of using an underwater scene in the shower was quite an obvious one, whilst using a wallpaper design is to show how we see ICON-GLASS as being an ideal alternative to tiling or wallpaper.

When visiting the showroom, customers entering from the car park will walk through a forest scene, thanks to ICON-GLASS. This eye catching image really showcases the potential of our exciting product.

Furniture gets a trial run in our showroom

An impromptu photoshoot was called yesterday to get some photos which we could use to promote the opening of our new showroom in the press.

It was our first change to see certain items on display for the first time, including iconic peices from Italian design houses Sovet and Fiam. The Ghost Chair, a peice held in very high regard within the furniture industry was unveiled along with Philippe Starck's Caadre Mirror.

Yesterday was also the day we fitted our first peice of ICON-GLASS in the showroom. A local painter provided us with his wonderful Venice painting, which has been enlarged and digitally printed onto glass. We are extremely happy with the outcome and sure this peice of ICON-GLASS will be a big talking point when the showroom opens later this month.

More glass furniture added to the Italian Designer Collection

A couple of weeks ago we introduced you to the Italian Designer Collection, consisting of beautiful curved glass furniture from the Italian giants FIAM and SOVET.

This collection was made up of 3 Sovet products and 5 Fiam products as these are the items we shall be displaying in our new glass furniture showroom in the Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham. (latest update can be seen here)

We've now decided to display more Fiam and Sovet items on our website, giving you even more choice.

At the time of writing this blog post, the Sovet section of the collection contains 8 beautiful items. The Fiam collection contains 5 items including the iconic Ghost chair, designed by Cini Boeri and the Caadre mirror, design by world famous designer Philippe Starck.

The process of building our new glass furniture showroom is finally starting to approach the finish line. It has took longer than first expected it is fair to say but we are sure the wait will be worth it once we can open our doors to the public and finally show off our high quality glass furniture which we're all very proud of here at Glassdomain.

Glassdomain makes an appearance at Interiors 2011

Glassdomain recently made an appearance at the Interiors 2011 show, displaying the Star Glass Coffee Table.

Interiors 2011 is the largest interiors trade event in the UK, which gathered together the industry’s top professionals for four day of essential business and networking. It was held at the National Exhibition Centre Birmingham (NEC) from January 23rd to 26th.

Birmingham Institute of Art & Design student Zoe Walker teamed up with Glassdomain for her Fable trend peice, in which she digitally printed her embroided textile onto vinyl to display on our Star Glass Coffee Table.

Zoe was awarded a year’s subscription to Global Color Mix magazine who were full of praise for her work. Carolina Calzada, Marketing Director, Global Color Mix – Research presented the Fable award.

The Italian Designer Collection

Working with the worlds greatest glass furniture design teams, we will shortly be offering products from both FIAM and SOVET, of Italy.

Glassdomain teams up with the British Glass Foundation

The charity was launched back in November at Hagley Hall in the West Midlands, with the focus on securing the future of glass collections and archives currently held at Broadfield House Glass Museum and Himley Hall.

The Foundation has already established a full board of trustees, which include, Stephen Pollock-Hill, President of British Glass 2010, Charles Hajdamach, Historian author and recognised world authority on British Glass, David Williams-Thomas of the Stevens & Williams glass family of Stourbridge and Graham Knowles, Chairman of British Glass Foundation and President of Friends of Broadfield House Glass Museum.

The collections and archives housed at Broadfield House Glass Museum and Himley Hall are a national treasure and the British Glass Foundation believe in these uncertain economic times, should not disappear from public view, more of the collections should be available and the existing facility should not be downgraded. The collections should have a worthy home and reflect the rich history of Stourbridge Glass, as well as being a beacon of glassmaking, design, architecture, conservation, acquisitions, education and tourism.

As well as Glassdomain, the British Glass Foundation is backed by many organisations such as, The Glass Association, The Glass Circle, Friends of Broadfield House Glass Museum, Scottish Glass Society, Contemporary Glass Society, Glass Collaborations, British Glass Federation and the Chairman of the British Society of Scientific Glassblowers to name but a few.

Many museums, scholars, glass artists, collectors and researchers across the world are keeping a keen interest in the future of the glass collections including, the V&A in London and the Corning Museum of Glass in New York.

Their mission statement

“The British Glass Foundation will create the national lead to promote, educate and inspire visitors to the rich 400 year history of Stourbridge Glass. We aim to secure the future of the collections and archives, and work with Dudley and Staffordshire Council to find a suitable and worthy home for the legacy that is British Glass. “

On our website, we’ve had some case studies on our ICON-GLASS projects avaliable for sometime. We finally have case studies focusing on a few glass tables and storage projects avaliable for you to view. These are all bespoke projects which we have been particularly proud of. With these case studies, we aim to show you just what we are capable of doing for you, as well as give you inspiration for your own glass furniture projects.
